SETTLE College students have been celebrating their “best ever” GCSE results today, with 80% of students gaining GCSE grades at A* to C. Principal William Bancroft said: “These are brilliant results, not only a continuation of the huge improvements the college has made over the last few years but also significantly above national averages. “At a time when the Government is criticising schools for achieving high pass rates through courses which carry multiple grades, it is important to note that the vast majority of our courses are still the traditional GCSEs, making this achievement all the greater. “We are delighted that, contrary to the national trend, boys’ performance is good and, in Maths, they have outstripped the girls. “We are also very pleased with the five A* to C score including English and Maths which, at 61%, is 10% above the school’s target. The students have put in a tremendous amount of hard work and the very high level of achievement in English and Maths is to be congratulated. Outstanding results were achieved by Peter Bentley, Tom Waugh, Olivia Cunliffe, Joe Hawkins, Tom Lowe, Harley Rushton, Katie Verden, Emily Ludlam-Brown, Sarah Atkinson, Ellie Fullalove, Molly-Kate Byrne, Oliver Dakin, Robbie Davidson, Laura Handy, Naomi Howlett and Beth Lazenby. In addition, students in Years 9 and 10 picked up two GCSE results this year. The school has embarked on an ambitious “stage not age” curriculum which allows students to take two optional GCSE courses in each of Years 9, 10 and 11 as well as the core of English, Maths and Science which are studied over three years. Mr Bancroft described the first set of results as exceptional : 96% of Year 10 gained one or more GCSE passes with a large number gaining A*and A at GCSE and Distinction* at BTEC.
