DAME Judi Dench has amazed school pupils by agreeing to star in their school play.

The Oscar-winner has provided the voice of the Giant in the Giggleswick School production of Into the Woods.

Her special recording will be played as part of the Sondheim musical, with a cast of 90 pupils from the school.

Dame Judi has been a patron of the school’s Richard Whiteley Theatre for four years and agreed to support its December production after she was approached by a pupil.

Sixth former Angus Broadbent, who plays Jack in the cast, said: “We were delighted, and excited, when she wrote back and agreed to be part of the production.”

The school’s foundation director Andrew Beales said Dame Judi was one of several high-profile figures who had stepped up to support the school theatre.

Others include Zoe Wannamaker, known for her part in TV sitcom My Family, and Tim Rooke, who starred in 2007 blockbuster Atonement.

Mr Beales said: “It will be very inspiring for the kids to step on stage with Judi’s voice behind them.”
