DRIVERS on the A590 faced delays tonight after a lorry carrying live chickens jackknifed near Newby Bridge.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said the two-wagon lorry hit a tree near the Newby Bridge roundabout at 5.20pm.

An eyewitness described the lorry as being 'embedded in walls and trees' and police confirmed there had been some wall damage.

An ambulance attended and the driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The road was closed to heavy goods vehicles until 9.40pm, but other traffic was able to trickle passed the scene.

There were delays between Ulverston and Lindale for much of the night.
