THOUSANDS of people are soaking up the festive cheer as Ambleside kicks off its 2011 Christmas celebrations.
A day-long series of events, including market stalls, street entertainment and an ice rink are the precursors to the annual lantern procession and Christmas lights switch-on.
From 4.30pm, Santa Claus will mount his sleigh and throw Christmas dust as he travels up Compston Road, which will magically illuminate twinkling lights.
The lantern procession gets underway at 4.40pm with a spectacular firework display at Rothay Park at 5pm rounding off the fun-filled day.
