PARENTS, pupils and residents are being invited to have their say on ways to improve road safety around Cartmel Primary School and Cartmel Priory.

A drop-in session will be held tomorrow (Tuesday 29 November) from 3:30pm to 6:30pm at Cartmel Priory School, where people will be able to view and comment on proposals to improve road safety near the schools.

The proposals are being developed after parents, pupils, teachers and parish councillors raised their concerns about road safety in the area.

Cumbria County Councillor for Cartmel, Rod Wilson, will fund the improvements through his Local Member Scheme budget.

The scheme allows each county councillor a £12,000 budget each year to spend on projects that will benefit their local community. Individual councillors choose which projects they would like the money to be spent on, pending agreement from other county councillors on the local committee.

The proposed improvements include new school flashing lights and pedestrian guard rail and improved signage and road markings near the school. Some alterations to the carriageway are also proposed.

Coun Wilson said: “Road safety in the area has been a concern for many local people, including the headteachers of both schools.

“Together with the county council’s highways and community engagement staff, we have worked with them and local people to develop some proposals for how to make streets around the schools safer for pedestrians.

“This meeting will be an important opportunity for people to see those plans and give their views based on their own experiences.”

Any works will go ahead in two phases, with the first phase due to start before April next year.
