Ghostly figure spotted at derelict South Lakeland house

Haunting: The photograph which 'terrified' demolition experts Haunting: The photograph which 'terrified' demolition experts

A HAUNTING photo of a woman at a window has ‘terrified’ demolition experts who spotted the ghostly figure in a derelict guest house.

The team say the image, taken at Meadowbank House, Kendal, made their ‘hair stand on end’.

Their eerie photo, taken at the Victorian premises in Shap Road, appears to show a lady, with earrings, standing at the ground floor window.

Former resident David Grimshaw claims the ghostly woman is his late mother, Frances, who died almost a year ago.

The 59-year-old managing director, who now lives in Bedford, said: “That is my mother. I’m totally convinced — no one else looks like that.

“She had glasses and big earrings and she used to wear a dress with a bow at the front.

“She used to stand in that room for hours on the phone — it was the guest house reception and she took bookings from there.

“She would have been horrified if she had known the house was being demolished because it was beautiful, so maybe that is why she’s turned up.”

Hancock demolition supervisor Robert Johnson, 38, of Heysham, took the photograph of the house shortly before it was knocked down, earlier this week.

“It wasn’t until I got home and showed my wife that we spotted the woman,” he said. “You can see the jewellery on her and everything.

“I’ve always been a sceptic but I’ll have to believe in ghosts now.”

Work colleague Stuart Shan, 34, of Blackburn, added: “The day before we took the photo we were stripping the building inside and I noticed the chandelier swinging on its own.

“We said at the time the place felt strange.

“My hairs were standing on end when I saw the photo. I believe it is a ghost.”

Demolition worker Paul Jackson, of Carnforth, said the ghostly sighting made him feel slightly strange about their role in taking down old buildings.

“It makes you wonder what we could possibly unearth.”

Dave Armstrong, of Kendal contractors Cox and Allen, said the five gabled building, which was originally a dentist’s in the early 1900s, has been taken down to be replaced with a new commercial property.

He said he could not explain the image of the woman.

“There was only a black wall behind the window, we had taken everything out — there were no visible features.”

Unlike the big cat story, this is obviously a practical 'joke'.

What a load of rubbish. I knew Mrs Grimshaw and that house very well. It looks nothing like her. In fact when you look at the pic in the paper it looks more like bird poo on the window!

I'm sorry to say you are all wrong. This is clearly the reflection of Cllr Thornton, as he surveys the ruins of his political career, aptly represented by a derelict house in Kendal.

I'm sorry but all of the above are wrong. This is very clearly the great U.S. statesman Benjamin Franklin. I suggest taking a look at his photo on wikipedia. An excerpt from the same is as follows:

"Franklin earned the title of "The First American" for his early and indefatigable campaigning for colonial unity; as an author and spokesman in London for several colonies, then as the first United States Ambassador to France, he exemplified the emerging American nation. Franklin was foundational in defining the American ethos as a marriage of the practical and democratic values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit, self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment. In the words of historian Henry Steele Commager, "In a Franklin could be merged the virtues of Puritanism without its defects, the illumination of the Enlightenment without its heat." inventing the type of society America would become. Franklin, always proud of his working class roots, became a successful newspaper editor and printer in Philadelphia, the leading city in the colonies."

What it does not say is that his dad owned a take away pie shop in Kendal. Ben left for a better life but returned just before he died to briefly run the business. Its location is believed to have been just where this house is. Could the ghostly vision be looking for one last sale?

FrontalLobe - you are absolutely correct. His brother Jerry started an ice cream business in Windermere following their father's death. Not sure what happened to it though.

There are similarities to this story from a few years ago:-

If you screw your eyes up a bit and look very hard at the picture in that story, you will eventually see that it is totally unlike the one here, despite the obvious connection.
