THE northern lights could be visible over South Lakeland tonight because of a freak solar storm.

A burst of charged particles released by a solar flare was due to hit the Earth today, and is expected to cause disruption to power grids and communication systems.

But the storm could also mean the northern lights are visible unusually far south - usually they can only be seen in the Arctic circle.

Cloud is expected over much of Cumbria tonight, but there is a chance that the phenomenon could be visible in areas with clear skies.

People who live away from areas of light pollution will have the best chance of seeing the spectacular phenomenon.

The effects of the storm are expected to continue in to today (Friday).
