A WEBSITE offering comprehensive information on the Appleby Horse Fair has been revamped ahead of this year’s event.

Organisations including Eden and South Lakeland district councils, Cumbria Police, the RSPCA and representatives from the Gypsy and Traveller communities have, for the fifth year running, formed a working group to ensure the fair runs smoothly.

And they hope changes to the event’s official website will keep the 10,000 travellers and 30,000 other visitors updated on stopping points, camp sites, road closures, transport, pubs which are open, animal welfare and activities.

Robin Hooper, of Eden District Council and who chairs the Multi-Agency Strategic Co-ordinating Group (MASCG), said: “It is our job to provide visitors and local residents with the services required to ensure the fair is safe and enjoyable for all.

“Our aim is to keep everyone updated of any changes to the event and provide them with as much information as possible in order for them to plan their route and travel and have an awareness of the facilities available while at the fair.”

Mr Hooper said the website had proven to be a ‘very useful tool’ in providing information to communities.

Cumbria Police’s assistant chief constable, Michelle Skeer, who oversees the fair’s policing operation, added: “We have invested a large amount of time ensuring the communities of Cumbria feel safe and reassured that we are working with partners to minimise disruption in the lead up to and during the event, but we are equally committed to working alongside gypsy and travellers to facilitate a safe and traditional fair.”

ACC Skeer said the updated website would help visitors and residents.

She added: “As with every fair, respecting each other’s needs and differences is the key to the success of the Appleby Horse Fair 2012.”

This year’s fair takes place between June 7 and June 13.
