A FORTY-three year-old motorcyclist was killed when he ‘misjudged’ a bend, an inquest in Kendal heard this morning.

Stephen William Gray, 43, of South Shields, died on April 25 last year, when his bike was in collision with a dry stone wall on the A686.

PC Mark Dempster, based at Ulverston, said Mr Gray approached the corner, just outside Alston, in “the wrong position and at the wrong speed.”

Recording an accidental death verdict, South and East Cumbria Coroner Ian Smith said: “In an effort to retract the error, Mr Gray tried to brake, but this resulted in destabilisation of the bike and the loss of control, which caused it to hit a dry stone wall.”

Mr Gray’s partner, Elaine Boyer, has put a seat in the Hartside Cafe, Alston - a popular meeting place for bikers - so that tributes can be paid by friends and family.
