Kendal soldier Lance Corporal Daniel Appleby is embarking on an expedition to reach the summits of at least three unconquered mountains on the fringes of the Arctic along with seven other soldiers from the 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment.

The soldiers, all based at Weeton Barracks near Blackpool, have chosen to tackle a range of peaks in the east of Greenland, a region called Liverpool Land, which is home to many unclimbed summits up to 1,400 metres in height in a bid to raise thousands of pounds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

During the three-week expedition the soldiers will climb at least three unconquered mountains – and unofficially name them.

“If you climb a route for the first time here in the UK you get to name it, we’re thinking of doing the same!” said Daniel.
