The new £60,000 colposcopy unit at Westmorland General Hospital has attracted praise for its service provision for women in Cumbria.

Facilities and equipment were upgraded at the hospital after a quality assessment in 2011 highlighted the need for substantial improvements.

The colposcopy suite provides a modern environment for the delivery of colposcopy, which aims to prevent cervical cancer by detecting pre-cancerous lesions at an early stage and treating them.

In its latest report, QA Cervical Screening North West says: “This is a highly motivated and dedicated unit which functions well as a team to provide a high quality service to women in Cumbria.

“The Trust has made huge improvements to the service and to the facilities since the visit in May 2011.”

Patrick McGahon, director of service and commercial development at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We’re very pleased to see that our progress has received such positive feedback.”

The upgraded suite comprises a new waiting area and separate, private rooms for consulting, treatment and recovery.
