Stagecoach to run council contracted services 'without subsidy'

BUS company Stagecoach has confirmed its Kendal, Barrow and Penrith depots will continue to run 'many' of its Cumbria County Council contracted services from September without subsidy.

A spokesman for the firm said a revised timetable was being introduced for the retained services.

"The new Barrow – Kendal service will also include Windermere from September and be operated by mostly brand new buses," said the spokesman.

"Having built up these services over the years and increased patronage, with improvements to efficiency, this enables us to continue running these routes without the need for subsidy."

Stagecoach will also launch a new ticket for home to school travel using the company's local bus network. At £380 for the year, this new ticket will reduce the cost of the school run and encourage use of local buses.

Contact Kendal depot on 01539 722143 for further details of the school day ticket.

Services being retained from September are: X35 Barrow – Kendal (re-numbered X6) 41, 41A, 42, 42A, 43, 45 and 46 Kendal Town Services 108 Penrith to Patterdale 735 Barrow – Kendal (renumbered X6) 551/552 Kendal – Arnside 505 – Ambleside to Coniston 567 – Kendal – Kirby Lonsdale 516 – Ambleside – Dungeon Ghyll 530 – Kendal - Cartmel Full details of bus service changes from September will be available from the Stagecoach website www.stagecoachbus.com/cumbrianorthlancs later in July.

It was only a few weeks ago that this paper reported that Stagecoach had lost the susidies on numerous routes including the Kendal Town ones, The Kendal to Arnside and Kendal to Barrow etc. Does this mean that they are carrying on with these routes or are competing against the other bus companies mentioned who have got the susidies?

In the past Stagecoach have run bus's slightly earlier than another company's timetable, to try and poach passengers.

They can afford to run at a loss to bankrupt a smaller company.

That's how they built their business. Glasgow ice cream wars!
Although on second thoughts, that's competition.

Lets put it this way, I would rather use Stagecoach buses than some of the old heaps from some of the other providers that you see doing the rounds.

now guess what will happen. It may be in a few weeks, months or a tad longer . Stagecoach will say that they cant afford to run these routes and they'll pull out unless they get a subsidy. And they'll get it too.
