COUNCILLORS are to consider giving the go ahead to a six month trial to collect plastic and cardboard from the kerbside.

If it is given the green light, householders in the trial areas of Burneside and parts of Kendal would receive an information leafle.

It will include details of the additional materials to be collected and the method of collection. More than 7,000 properties are included in the trial area. The first collections of plastic and cardboard would start week commencing October 15.

Householders would be provided with a clear plastic sack for plastic recyclable materials that would be replaced with a new one after each collection. Cardboard would be placed in the blue paper recycling box and all the additional materials would then be collected with the glass, can and paper on the householder’s normal recycling collection day. Coun Clare Feeney-Johnson, portfolio holder for the Environment, said: “We have listened to request from local residents for kerbside collections of plastic and cardboard.

“The initial trial of 7,500 properties will allow us to monitor tonnages of the materials, the collection methods, the response of residents and the effects on the recycling bring sites and financial implications into the future.

“Our residents have an excellent track record and commitment to recycling in South Lakeland and I am hoping that this trial will encourage people to help increase the recycle rate and help make better use of our natural resources.” The proposal for the collection of plastic and cardboard from the kerbside for an initial trial period of six months will go before the SLDC’s Cabinet on Wednesday (September 19).
