KENDAL’S Queen Katherine School headteacher Stephen Wilkinson reflected on a highly-successful academic and sporting year at the annual awards evening.

Mr Wilkinson said that one of the reasons the school was judged to be outstanding in four main OFSTED categories was linked to the breadth and balance of its curriculum and the commitment to inclusion and staff development.

He said one of the most notable events was the success of the co-location of Sandgate School into the grounds of QKS. The schools have had three major events over the past year — a sea kayaking expedition, taking part in The Kielder Challenge and a production of Les Miserables.

Other events that stood out for Mr Wilkinson included starting the year as a National Support School, being part of the South Lakes Federation Teaching School Alliance, winning the Mayor’s Kendal in Bloom prize for the community garden and two students gaining a place with the Youth Musical Theatre UK and a further two with the National Youth Theatre.

Mr Wilkinson described the school’s record GCSE results as ‘outstanding’, with 68 per cent of students gaining five A* to C grades. Ninety per cent got five or more GCSEs, with 27 per cent attaining grades A*/A.  Twenty students got nine A*/A grades.

Mr Wilkinson said that dance had really taken off and more than 250 students had participated in music, dance, drama and musical theatre classes during the Arts Festival Week.

Year 10 student Harry Brooks took to the stage at the Royal Opera House in London in a show featuring the next generation of dancers, singers and musicians.

On the sports field, 11 students qualified for the county’s cross country championships and the Year 9 netball team came joint first in the South Lakes tournament.

And EYE-BEES under 14 girls’ football team —almost all QKS students — won the South Lakes Girls League.

The academic awards were presented by Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron , while Great Britain’s Olympic water polo player Glen Robinson handed out the sports awards.
