A SCAM operating in Kendal has prompted a warning from Cumbria County Council.

Trading Standards officers are urging locals to steer clear of salesman going door-to-door selling ‘spare’ mattresses out of the back of a white van.

A spokesman said: “The driver of a white transit van was seen in the area and claimed to be making a delivery to a hotel and had spare memory foam mattresses for sale, at a reduced price.

“The driver calls at local shops and also stops people in the street to try to sell them.

“The van has a photo of a person lying on a bed or mattress but has no company name and only a mobile number.

“The van might look professional but we believe it has magnetic signs which can be removed.”

There are concerns over the validity of Fire Safety labels on the mattresses, which may not comply with regulations.

Residents are advised to avoid buying products on the doorstep.

Anybody who encounters the company should contact Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0845-404 0506 or the police on 101.
