BRANDISHING muskets and pikes, a troop of foraging Parliamentarians encountered Lady Anne Clifford at Brough Castle’s historical weekend.
The showdown between Westmorland’s feistiest female and a boisterous gang of Oliver Cromwell’s supporters brought the English Civil War to life for villagers.
Church Brough actress Kim Lyon, who portrayed Lady Clifford, said that during the English Civil War Parliamentarians would call on castles asking for provisions.
But being a neutral land owner, the Sealed Knot historical re-enactment group believed Lady Clifford would have sent them ‘firmly on their way’.
“She was neutral in the civil war although she may have summoned Royalist protection if Parliamentarians were foraging in the area.
"She is one of the region’s most well known figures so it’s been great to bring her to life with an event like this,” said Mrs Lyon.
Camps reflecting life in the civil war were set up outside the 12th century castle where visitors could find out more about the food, dress and weapons of the era.
