PRIME Minister David Cameron surprised motorists and shoppers when he made an impromptu stop for lunch at Tebay Services today (Friday).

The PM was on a busy day of appointments and his advisors recommended the family-run Tebay as a great place to break for lunch.

Tebay Services is currently celebrating 40 years of serving customers on the motorway and Mr Cameron opted for homemade lasagne made using beef bred on the family farm adjoining Tebay services.

Sarah Dunning, who owns and runs Tebay Services, was able to catch a few words with Mr Cameron who enquired how business was going and spoke about the new development in Gloucester which he mentioned was in his neck of the woods.

David Cameron said: "I wish every services was like this, the food was delicious.”

Sarah Dunning was able to thank the Prime Minister for calling in and gave him a bag of goodies from the farm shop including a selection of homemade pies, a retro black forest gateaux made especially for the Tebay services 40th  birthday, as well as products from other local suppliers including  Wild and Fruitful, Cartmel Village Shop and Hesket Newmarket Brewery.

Also in the hamper was a selection of Gloucestershire products as a nod to the family firm’s new £40 million project on the M5, where building work is now underway to build Gloucester  Services north between junction 11a and 12 which will be opening in time for Summer  2014.

Sarah Dunning added; "It was a lovely surprise to meet David Cameron, especially as it was his first visit to Tebay and one that he seemed to enjoy very much."

The Prime Minister had this morning been in Chorley laying bricks at housing developments and speaking to first time buyers in accordance with the First Buy scheme.
