A RETIRED Lunesdale GP has been left ‘frustrated and annoyed’ after council workers created a parking bay which allows drivers to block his car port.

Dr Graham Mathews couldn’t believe his eyes when white lines were painted on the newly-resurfaced road in Main Street, Kirkby Lonsdale.

The markings give drivers permission to park for up to an hour in front of two large doors which open on to his property.

Dr Mathews, who regularly has to take his 80-year-old wife Marion to hospital appointments, said he feared not being able to get his car out in an emergency.

“Most motorists realise that the bay has been marked wrong and don’t park there,” said the 82-year-old.

“But there are some who do. I’ve never been completely trapped in because I’ve waited 10 or 15 minutes and usually the car leaves.

"However, sometimes I’ve had to ask a driver to move so I can get my car out. It’s frustrating and annoying.”

Dr Mathews also described the situation as ‘potentially dangerous’.

“My wife is rather ill and you never know when you have to get out,” he said.

“She goes to hospital regularly for appointments, although fortunately I have never been stuck long enough so we could not get there.”

A Cumbria County Council spokesman said highways officials were looking into the matter.
