A MANUFACTURING firm has developed an automated transporter to help improve animal welfare.

Houghton-Parkhouse Ltd has patented multiple features on its Platinum design livestock transporter, which has already scooped a national award for innovation and created two new jobs at the company’s base in Milnthorpe.

About 3,000 of the transporter’s parts are made at the company’s base on Grisleymires Lane.

Michael Houghton, who runs the family firm with a team of 65, said the product proved small firms could successfully take command of each stage of their production.

“Seeing this right through from raw materials, to manufacturing and its final coat of paint gives our team something to be proud of – there aren’t many businesses that work from start to finish like that.”

The Platinum transporter has sold to seven firms from Castle Douglas, in Scotland, to Cornwall, in its first nine months.

Key designer Kevin Cruickshank said it was developed to make it easier for drivers to maintain high animal welfare standards.

“This is very versatile and builds on earlier models we’ve evolved over 65 years,” he said.

“The vents can be opened and closed automatically and the body of the design can safely carry different livestock, like a Noah’s Ark, because of its adjustable inner floors.”

Its patented features include an automated vent system, a spring-loaded deck locking system, hydraulic doors and an adaptable compartment system.

The bespoke livestock transporter design was awarded a certificate of merit for best new product and innovation at the National Machinery Exhibition at Newark.

Mr Houghton’s father John set up Houghton Parkhouse 65 years ago.

His son Steven is also a member of the team, working as senior manager.
