CHARLOTTE Brough has been named as one of the UK’s brightest young engineers after winning a prestigious scholarship from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Charlotte won the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Whitworth Scholarship Award, which will contribute £2,500 per year towards her BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering at Furness College.

The BAE Systems employee was one of just 14 top engineering students in the UK to receive the scholarship at a ceremony at the Institution’s headquarters in London.

Group commander Mark Hunt, president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Scott Witting, president of the Whitworth Society presented Miss Brough with her award.

Mr Hunt said: “Charlotte has proven herself to be one of the best young engineers in the UK and I was delighted to present them with the Undergraduate Scholarship. At a time when the UK is facing a huge skills gap when it comes to young engineers, it’s fantastic to see young people like Charlotte taking their first steps in the profession. Engineers are vitally important to the UK economy. They design and develop everything from the cars we drive to the medical equipment used in our hospitals. I am confident that Charlotte will enjoy a successful and exciting career in engineering.”

The Institution is committed to offering financial support to apprentices gaining a university degree. The Whitworth Scholarship Awards are all about enabling outstanding engineers, who have excellent academic and practical skills and the qualities needed to succeed in industry, to take an engineering degree-level programme in any engineering discipline.
