OFSTED inspectors have returned a 'good' verdict following a two-day visit to a Windermere primary school in the week after a new head teacher was appointed.

Peter Harrison took over the reins at St Cuthbert's Primary School at the start of the academic year and inspectors came knocking on September 10-11.

And now the education watchdog has published its findings - judging the 64-pupil Princes Road school as good across the board.

"By the end of the visit, the inspector really did appreciate the unique and distinctive nature of this small primary school with a group of pupils who are made to feel extremely welcome, safe and at home in school so they can become successful learners," said Mr Harrison.

"The whole school community found the process of inspection a positive experience which often bucks the trend of many schools."

Inspectors observed four teachers at work and visited eight lessons.

They also scrutinised pupils' work and listened to them read as well as analysing 11 staff questionnaires.

"A school inspection during the first part of the academic year has its benefits as it provides the school with some additional focus for the forthcoming year," added Mr Harrison.

Brendan Drury, chair of the school governors, paid tribute to the staff and children for the example they set and the pride they have in their school.
