A NEW multi-million pound addition to Ulverston Victoria High School has thrown open its doors after a special ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The £4.5m project, funded by Cumbria County Council, has transformed the school by building a new sixth form library and made extensive improvements to existing teaching spaces, circulation and facilities.

On Friday, November 27, County Council Chairman Melvyn Worth opened the new site, on Springfield Road, with the help of Year 7 students.

Cllr Worth said: "The site looks wonderful and I’m sure the students and staff are going to feel the benefits of their new surrounding."

The main contractor, Esh Border Construction Ltd, have improved the school by remodelling the site to be able to release the older high maintenance buildings.

Headteacher, Denis Fay, said: "This is a brilliant day for UVHS when at last, after a long campaign, we can give our students, staff and parents the buildings they deserve.

"Thank you to the Local Authority for working with us to release resources in exchange for the opportunity to utilise our large site for further development and also to ESH Border Construction for their dedication and perseverance in delivering what has been a challenging project.

"The mixture of our old buildings with the new, symbolises the school in its commitment to traditional values underpinning progressive ideas."
