YEAR 11 students from Queen Katherine School, Kendal, visited Furness College at Barrow for two engineering taster days.

The pupils, who are all studying GCSE Engineering, were put through their paces aided by Furness College staff and BAE engineering apprentices. The taster days provided the students with the opportunity to complete their GCSE projects in a workshop environment.

The students enjoyed working in the state-of-the art industrial mechanical and fabrication and welding workshops as well as taking advantage of the college’s computer aided design suite.

Hannah Wood, 15, from Kendal, who is looking at a career in engineering or the NHS said; “I’ve really enjoyed today – I’ve been working on a car alarm system as my project helped by the staff who have been very supportive. I’ve also learnt a lot from the BAE apprentices who were supporting us. The facilities at the college are great – I’ve been really impressed. It’s been really interesting to work in a new environment.”
