CARLISLE: Sept 17, Borderway Mart held their Annual Latter Fair show and sale of breeding rams which was kindly sponsored by Capontree Vets and Dodd & Co. Suffolk Rams - Shearling rams met a lackluster demand, with only the best quality sorts finding homes at reasonable values.  The sale was topped at £560 for a strong shearling consigned by Messrs Harrison of Hazelhead. Ram lambs were a useful selection and a more spirited demand. Selling to £440 twice from Messrs Hewson of Burgh Head and Messrs Irving of East Cliff. Top price of the day went to the day’s Champion, a tremendous Texel shearling, consigned by Ruth Stevenson of Nunfield Farm which sold to £1200. Taking the Reserve Champion ticket and second top price was Messrs Carlile of Fowrass Farm, Penrith with a powerful Texel shearling, which sold to £800. Show Results. H&H held their ‘Latter Fair’ of Mule lambs where an entry of 5500 head came forward. The sale fixture was kindly sponsored by Dodd & Co Accountants and Capontree Vets. The Pre sale show saw 14 outstanding pens of 10 competing for the Dodd & Co Perpetual Challenge Trophy. The job of judging fell into the capable hands of G.E Jackson, Bentham and R. Graves, High Hesket, with P. Fox, Cliteroe acting as Referee. After much deliberation, the Championship rosette and special NEMSA rosette for the highest placed pen of society lambs was awarded to Messrs Smith-Jackson of High Town, for their outstanding top pen, which later went on to sell for the day’s top price of £400 and was purchased by Mr R Carter. The Reserve Champion rosette was awarded to Kilnstown Farms Ltd, which later went on to sell to £170 and was purchased by Messrs JJ Brough. The sale was deemed a huge success with the NEMSA lambs averaging £102.25 and an overall average of £96.51 being achieved which is a fall of £6.36 on the year. Running lambs were a great trade also, with the majority achieving £88-92. Sept 16: Weekly commercial dairy and weekly sale of calves, whereby a smaller number of cattle was presented to a large ringside of buyers. A fantastic entry of 352 calves were forward with a quality show on offer with all calves dearer on the week.
