FAMILIES have been challenged to spend as much time in the great outdoors as possible this Easter.

This comes as a report from the RSPB charity revealed youngsters are missing out on the mental and physical benefits of not spending enough time outside.

It discovered only one in five children have a 'healthy connection' with nature.

The charity has a Moorland Safari Walk taking place in the Forest of Bowland on Saturday, as well as a 'Heard the Buzz' bee and buttery craft session in Downham Village Hall.

There are a series of events taking place at Brockholes nature reserve over the Easter period.

These include an explorer challenge, Easter Wreath craft sessions and 'wildside' an outdoor adventure club.

The charity's 'Wild Challenge' campaign aims to organise fun activities for youngsters to take part in at home, including minibeast safaris, creating a hedgehog cafe and planting for wildlife.

BBC presenter Miranda Krestovnikoff, who is the RSPB's president, said the whole family was encouraged to take part.

She said: "I enjoy nothing more than spending time outside with my family and showing my children what’s out there, be it a majestic bird of prey or a quirkier creature like a slow worm.

"Research keeps proving what our instincts know, time outside isn’t just good for us, it’s vital.

"As a family we’ve enjoyed going on our own wild adventure discovering the minibeast in our garden.

"The wild challenge is open to all; whether you live in a busy city, seaside haven or a sleepy village.

"There is something to do at all times of the year, no matter what the weather."

Every family who achieves a bronze, silver or gold award for their work during April from the RSPB will be entered into a prize draw to win the Ultimate Wild Challenge explorer kit worth more than £500.

The kit includes a selection of wildlife goodies including a hedgehog home, minibeast explorer kit and a bat detector to help them continue their adventure after the holidays.

Emma Reed, RSPB families, education and youth manager in northern England, said: “Wild Challenge is a great way for families to get outside and explore together.

"Whether you are looking to improve your health, discover more about the wonderful wildlife around you or simply make some magical memories.

"The campaign is here to help every family go on their own wild adventure."
