A NEW inspection system aimed at repairing the most dangerous potholes quickly has been criticised by Lancashire County Council's Labour opposition as 'too little, too late'.

Today (Thursday) its cabinet is set to approve the new regime for highway maintenance to prioritise the most serious problems for action.

The £10million scheme aims to tackle the worst road surface within four hours, with response times for other problems ranging from two days to 20 days.

Labour's deputy leader and transport spokesman Cllr John Fillis, said "Just 12 months in to a Conservative administration and people are telling me that the roads are worse than ever.

"We have had the excuses that it's too cold, it's wet and there were leaves in the potholes. It's called winter and happens every year.

"We may lose a few days but the rest of Lancashire keeps working, why can't the council?

"The damage has already been done to the roads and the catch up required will far out way any new moneys into the system.

"This is too little too late.

"Repair time has also been increased by an extra two days if reported by the public for the vast majority of potholes."
