A Kendal wedding official helped two children pull off a secret Lake District ceremony for their parents as part of a CBBC show.

Humanist service conductor Debra Jesset had just two weeks to help Bobby and Flo Horton plan a spectacular outdoor wedding for their mum and dad Dave and Sue.

With the assistance of CBBC stars Ed Petrie and Naomi Wilkinson, ‘Marrying Mum and Dad’ allowed the youngsters to choose a wildest theme, venue and entertainment for the big day.

And as the Horton family loved camping and walking in the Lake District, ten-year-old Bobby and eight-year-old Flo, from Lancaster, arranged the one-off service on the shores of Ullswater.

Bobby said: “After all the things they have done for us we wanted to do something for them, and we wanted it to be unique.”

It certainly was distinctive – featuring abseiling, canoeing, a mountain cake and outfits sourced from charity shops.

Mrs Jesset, who conducts weddings throughout Cumbria, said it was one of the ‘most unusual ceremonies’ she had ever performed.

She said: “When the BBC contacted me about the show I was very sceptical about being involved but once I met the family I was in no doubt that a humanist ceremony was right for them.

“What was hard was keeping quiet about the children’s plans. Their parents knew a wedding was being organised but not the details of it. I was able to ask Dave and Sue questions so I could write a personal ceremony – but I couldn’t say anything about it.

“A local band made a surprise appearance and it was great to see them dancing on the lake shore.”

Newly-wed Mrs Horton added: “The children have done an outstanding job – it has been fantastic.”
