Ingleton village car park in line for upgrade

As part of its £36,000 investment in the village, Craven District Council is carrying out work at the car park it an attempt to make it easier to use, more pedestrian friendly and more attractive.

It includes the creation of a new pedestrian walkway, resurfacing, new lighting and landscaping, including the removal of an old Portakabin to open up the view across the Viaduct.

The cost of parking is also set to fall from March 24, when the works are due to be completed.

A 'Pop and Shop’ scheme is being introduced, to allow 45 minutes’ parking for 20p, while a new 90-minute parking period for 90p will also be introduced, replacing the old charge of 90p for one hour.

The scheme is the first to be delivered as part of the Ingleton Village Centre Action Plan, which was prepared by the council in partnership with Ingleton Parish Council, Ingleton Area Business Group and Ingleton Rural Community Association.

Cllr Simon Myers, the council’s lead member for Enterprising Craven, said: “We have developed this plan following consultation with the local businesses and residents, having identified a need to encourage more people to use the village centre.

“Our consultation flagged up a lack of free or inexpensive, centrally located car parking in the village. These changes to the layout and parking charges are designed to provide a good quality car parking facility that is tailored to the needs of Ingleton – catering for residents and shoppers.”

The consultation had identified a feeling that lower parking charges in nearby centres made it difficult to attract shoppers, who were looking for low cost, short stay parking close to the central shopping area.

The council is investing up to £36,000 of the £110,000 contribution it allocated to support the delivery of the action plan.

The funding is from the council’s New Homes Bonus money which it agreed to use for the provision of infrastructure to support the communities and economy of Craven.
