I WHOLEHEARTEDLY support the views and comments of Stephen Tomlinson (Letters, March 8, 'A blight on environment'). I, too, am dismayed by the amount of litter on our verges and in our hedgerows, and also the abundance of dog fouling.
A prime example of the latter problem exists in Arnside, on sections of the foreshore, which is becoming a dog toilet area; closely followed by parts of the former railway embankment between Arnside and Sandside.
Not only do you have to watch where you tread, but dog faeces presents a recognised hazard to children, and is dangerous to other animals, especially farm animals.
Surely in an AONB such littering should not be tolerated.
However, by-laws are not the answer, as we have nobody to enforce them. Perhaps the answer will appear when people stop visiting the area because it has become blighted by litter and dog poo!
