I AM a lot like Goldilocks when it comes to choosing which Indian dish to order.

It has to be just right, not too hot but definitely not too cool.

When a dish is brought out that offers that lovely burning sensation but, not ‘overkill’, then for me there is no better meal in the world.

So whenever I go to an Indian restaurant for the first time I'm always a tad nervous the dish will not match my expectations for heat intensity.

However Asian Spice, in the heart of Bentham, got it just right for my discerning palate.

The little restaurant is laid out with what has now become the classical English Indian decor – floral carpet, a moving picture of a waterfall, bright green and pink colour code for the tables and serviettes.

As sooon as we entered, the staff were quickly on hand on to seat us and find out what drinks we would like. The restaurant offers a mixture of Asian beers and soft drinks.

A fresh batch of poppadoms was brought out with four contrastingly delicious dips, including mango chutney, a minty yoghurt kachumbar and lime pickle.

I opted for the vegetable balti, to be made with an extra hot sauce, pilau rice and peshwari naan bread The temperature was spot on, the heat hit the back of mouth from the first nibble but was not burning. A variety of vegetables was served within the dish, including peas, onions, tomatoes and potatoes.

A huge amount of rice joined the main meal, brought out in a separate bowl. My naan was fluffy with a good amount of coconut and sugar for a sweet taste to contrast very well with the spice and seasoning.

The rest of the menu offered classic Indian meals, with options of having them served with a selection of meats and fish.

An overall very tasty evening out and definitely worth a drive to this restaurant.
