During the 12 trips over the last week or so that I have made between Bowness and Windermere, I'm delighted to say that I noticed that the cycle way between the two villages was being put to good use.

I nearly ran over a family of four plus buggy who were using it as a walkway coming towards the traffic (steadfastly ignoring the cycle signs painted on the lane, and the pavement on the opposite side of the road); ditto a party of about ten Japanese folk, walking uphill from Bowness.

The lane would also appear to have made a very accommodating parking bay on the right hand side of the road going towards Windermere, as well as a private motor lane for a mobility scooter travelling at about 4mph and holding up at least eight cars, mine included.

Of cyclists - there were two. Both wiry, bronzed chaps, zooming effortlessly uphill.

I really can't imagine the lack of any cycle lane whatsoever posing a problem to this pair - they would simply have taken a shortcut over the nearest perpendicular fell to their destination.

Of families, unfit porky folk, tourists who might have left their cars at home? Nary a one.

As the government is planning to spend 94 million pounds nationwide on cycle lanes, may I suggest that our trusty MP, Mr Farron, asks the government if we might have our share in cash instead?

I would like to see it spent on filling all the potholes in the county (properly please, not some naff job that disintegrates at the first sign of frost ) and if there happens to be a few bob left over, a couple of extra GPs at our surgery wouldn't go amiss.

Since the influx of all our foreign residents - welcome as they are - the days have long gone when one could hope to see a doctor of one's choice within the week, however urgent the situation.
