BRRR!! How flipping cold is it?

It’s getting towards the end of lambing now and as I speak we have about 20 sheep left to lamb.

To be honest, it hasn’t been the best lambing time this year because of the weather being so cold. The grass has not started to grow yet so the cows are still inside and the sheep are still being fed.

Before the cows go out they are all given an injection to prevent BVD - bovine viral diarrhoea. This is a nasty virus - an infectious viral disease of cattle - that causes really bad diarrhoea, the cow goes very lean and wastes away. It also causes abortion and infertility.

The cows’ hooves are checked and if any need trimming or treatment, Mark Bleeze, our foot trimmer, comes out and sorts them.

The sheep are dosed with a drench that prevents fluke and worms. And after all the stock has been taken care of it’s the time of year to get the meadows ready for silage and hay time.

Fingers and toes crossed we get some grass!
