Could I remind your readers that Stricklandgate in Kendal from the Town Hall to the library is not limited to pedestrians.
Some motors vehicles can use it southbound only, but bicycles can and do use it both ways quite legally. Pedestrians need to look BOTH ways.
Recently I rode through Stricklandgate northbound and was astounded by the number of pedestrians stepping out into the road without looking south.
One lady walked across in front of me without looking in my direction as she called for her small child to follow her.
Another lady stepped out straight in front of me.
When I pointed out she had not looked before walking into the road she said "Why didn't you ring your bell?"
The very good reason was that I needed my hands on the brakes. If I had wasted time ringing my bell I would have hit her.
I was riding slowly and carefully - next time she may not be so lucky.
Yes, in an area with lots of pedestrians cyclists need to ride very carefully but pedestrians also need to take responsibility for their own safety and look both ways before stepping out into the road.
