You published a picture of a Stanier Mogul locomotive No. 42968 passing the remaining building of Brisco station three miles south of Carlisle.

This station was built for the opening of the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway in 1846 but was closed in 1852 when it was replaced by the station at Wreay, which itself closed in 1943.

The locomotive was built at Crewe in January 1934 and was withdrawn in December 1966.

A Stanier Mogul Trust was set up to raise funds for the purchase of the locomotive for preservation and when this had been achieved it was transferred to the Severn Valley Railway, who no doubt hold all available details of its history.

The train in your picture shows a number of empty milk tankers, which would be returning to the Appleby depot of United Dairies.

Its route therefore would be by the North Eastern Railway line, which then left the West Coast Line at Eden Valley Junction, south of Penrith.

I have found an almost identical photograph of Stanier Mogul No. 42981 in this same location taken on the evening of June 5, 1962, the only difference being that in your picture there is no bedsheet on the washing line!
