Caton edge local derby as Bentham gain revenge for early-season defeat
CATON United edged their local derby with Ingleton in a lively affair.
Within the opening 60 seconds a Caton attack broke down. The ball was swept out to the right wing where Alex Hartley out-muscled Caton captain Dave Wood and the Ingleton man’s shot from 10 yards gave the keeper no chance.
Caton responded well as Jordan Sparks sent the keeper the wrong way with a penalty after a man was brought down in the box.
The game was swinging from end to end and in the 61st minute Caton keeper Ian Pierpoint made a fantastic penalty save from Hartley to keep the scores tied.
With six minutes left though Caton got the winner as substitute Chris Wright jinked his way through the defence to put the ball past the keeper and cap a 2-1 victory.
Arnside won their second game of the season in a high-quality affair against Storeys. James Kirkham scored the only goal as Arnside moved out of the relegation places.
Bentham gained ample revenge for an early season defeat at the hands of Tic Dyn/Overton/ Middleton by winning the return game easier than the 3-0 scoreline suggests. Tic had no answer to man of the match James Earnshaw, who assisted David Whitfield with the opening goal and had a hand in the effort scored by Daniel Briggs-Calvert.
Earnshaw wrapped up a super game with his side’s third goal.
Cartmel had an easier than expected win over Bowerham. Graham Rhodes opened the scoring followed by Joel Drinkall with a brace, and Michael Robinson added the fourth. Cartmel also scored for Bowerham when Ricky Wallbank managed to beat his own keeper but it finished 4-1 to Cartmel.
Carnforth Rangers prevailed 2-0 as they successfully battened down the hatches against Marsh United. Mark Plevey put Rangers ahead and two great saves from the keeper kept United at bay. But Adam Lund scored the second goal for Carnforth, and that knocked the fight out of Marsh.
