After Extra Time

National EHB Knock-Out Vase

PENALTIES were just two minutes away for Kendal as they almost defied David versus Goliath odds against Tameside, a side second in Division One.

Division Four Kendal saw Jon Elleray return after a five-year absence, and he formed part of a stellar performance from the Cumbrian side to give Tameside a run for their money.

In a high-scoring affair Kendal found themselves 6-5 down going into the dying embers of the game, Nick Davis (two), John Stanwith, Andy Smith and Aaron Screen bagging the goals for the Cumbrians.

But a last minute equaliser by Ewan Galloway took the game into the golden goal extra time to find out who would progress to the next round.

Unfortunately with two minutes remaining, a penalty flick for Tameside got them that crucial goal, and the Greens fell just short of providing a huge scalp in the tournament.

Meanwhile in Division Four on Saturday, Kendal picked up a simple 5-0 success over Mossley Hill 2nds.

Iain Donaldson helped keep a clean sheet as Galloway smashed in four goals, with Steve Barclay adding his name to the scoresheet.

Preston 3rds 1

Windermere 3

North West Division Three

WINDERMERE maintained their 100 per cent winning record against a very determined Preston side.

Preston had the better chances in the opening exchanges and only last-ditch tackles from man of the match Dom Quill stopped them getting a clear shot at debut keeper Josh Quinn.

But ‘Mere took control and were unlucky not to go ahead before finally securing two goals in quick succession. Louis Mussetti found Scott Santamera, who beat two players before unleashing a reverse stick shot deflected in by Matt Hartnett.

Then, almost from the restart, Will Dolman had a shot deflected in off a defenders' foot for an own goal.

Preston responded with a breakaway strike to make it 2-1 at half-time, and the second half was an almighty battle for supremacy until Preston went down to 10 men.

Matt Hartnett scored with another deflection, this time from a Dolman pass, to seal a deserved but hard-won victory.

Windermere's development side beat Kendal 9-1 in their Cumbria Sunday Association fixture with goals by Luke Blezard (3), Ed Brownell (2), Callum Gallop, Andy Wood, Alan Moulton and Jason Balmer. Kendal's goal was scored by Harry Denney.

* Meanwhile South Lakes lost 3-2 at home to Didsbury Northern 3rds in a result that sees them drop to seventh.

Their second team fared better as they defeated Carlisle 2nds 3-2 in Division Six, while Kirkby Lonsdale lost their first game of the season in Division Seven when they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at Lancaster and Morecambe 3rds.
