A STRONG squad of Ulverston swimmers made the trip to Workington to participate in their Annual President's Gala which always provides a stern test of the swimmers fitness and ability.

The meet, which contains among other events a 400m freestyle and the gruelling 400m individual medley, attracted a healthy entry from the Otters.

Their leading light was the immaculate 11-year-old Rebecca Fell, who gave a display from the gods to dominate her events, taking gold in 200m butterfly, breaststroke, freestyle and the all round 100m individual medley.

Alix Knagg, 14, was also on top of her game, giving her usual display of skill and power to collect four golds for 200m butterfly and backstroke, 100m IM and 50m freestyle. She went on to take silver at 400m and 200m freestyle following tremendous tussles with Copeland’s Becky Whalley.

Another outstanding winner was Eden Joy-Light, who burned off the opposition to take gold in 200m backstroke, breaststroke and 100m IM with a silver for 50m freestyle.

Taylor Aplin, 10, also got into the mix with a momentous clash with Holly Howson (Carlisle) and with both swimmers matching each other down to the wire, Aplin held it together to take the win.

She added another gold with a fine swim in the 100m IM and picked up silver for 200 freestyle and butterfly and 50m freestyle.

More gold medals went to Callum Bond (50m freestyle), Georgina Milburn (200m backstroke), Michael Cheetham (200m butterfly).

They also added a number of silver and bronze medals and P.B’s to their score along with Owen Minnican, Chloe Jackson, Amy Richardson, Rhiannon Ellis, Anya Sharp Sophie and Chloe Richardson.

Emily Reay (Kendal/Barrow) also had great success with a gold and three silvers and Troutbeck Bridge’s Callum Seton got a host of PB’s for his eight swims.
