CARTMEL and District played exceptionally well to beat a very good Bootle side in the first round of the Furness and District FA Senior Cup. Their defence had to be on top form and two-well taken goals by veteran Matthew Burrows and Phil Towler were enough for Cartmel to progress.

After their shock set-back last week Bentham travelled to play Morecambe Royals in the 848-848 Taxis/Sam Price Memorial Cup second round.

It was no surprise when Bentham took the lead when dangerman James Earnshaw was allowed the freedom of the Royals penalty area to calmly slot the ball into the net after 40 minutes and Tim Whieldon made it 2-0 from close range early in the second half.

Sean Hardwick pulled one back with nine minutes remaining but it was not enough and Bentham progressed to the semi-final.

In the Premier Division a goal from Mark Burkitt was enough to give Caton United victory over Carnforth Rangers to inflict a first league defeat on the latter since September 1.

Richard Cragg scored with a header to give Galgate a 1-0 half time lead over Arnside. The second half saw Chris Gardner score before Steve Wood fired an unstoppable shot past the keeper to make it 3-0.

A James Kirkham penalty reduced the arrears to 3-1 but Gardner and a 25-yard strike from Craig Cottam saw Galgate secure the three points.

Bottom club Ingleton are five points adrift at the bottom of the table after losing 5-4. Edward Read scored a hat-trick with Alex Hartley bagging a goal for Ingleton, but Storeys won through a Rob Evans brace and goals from Steve Miller, Jon Pedder and Phil Oliver.
