KENDAL Town are preparing for their biggest game of the season today in a match described by Town boss Steve Edmondson as ‘a massive six-pointer’.

Basement club Eastwood Town are the visitors to Parkside Road today - a side just four points behind second-from-bottom Kendal.

Victory for the Black and Whites could see them close the gap between themselves and safety to one point, with Stocksbridge Park Steels away at Rushall Olympic.

Mintcakes boss Steve Edmondson said he hopes his side are up for the fight.

“It’s a huge game and I just hope all the players are up for it and they realise it’s a massive six-pointer,” he said.

“We’ve got to start getting points on the board - it’s as simple as that.”

Captain Craig Dootson has joined Buxton on a month’s loan to keep his fitness levels at optimum condition after he was told that Ryan Robinson would be keeping his place in the side due to an impressive first two games for the Black and Whites.

Dootson is scheduled to return on March 5.

Maison McGeechan has returned from his holiday to Thailand and the tricky winger looks set to return to the side for the Eastwood match after impressing before his vacation.

New signings James Short, who has joined from Morecambe for four weeks, the Bradford City centre back Dean Overson, another loan signing, and former Prescot Cables left-sided player Callum Hochin are all also vying for a place in the starting line-up.

“Maison has come back early from his holiday for these big games we have coming up,” said Edmondson.

“While he is not guaranteed a place in the starting line-up, he was one of our best players before he went away and was creating problems for the opposition.

“Craig Dootson is an excellent goalkeeper and he wasn’t prepared to sit on the bench, which would have been the case had he stayed because Ryan Robinson had a couple of good games so we have to keep faith with that.

“But the door is most definitely not shut on him - things can happen in football and you never know, we might need to call him back.”

Edmondson added that the club is trying to sign a striker in time for the game.

Club secretary Craig Campbell said he was confident the Eastwood match would go ahead after the spate of bad weather, and the pitch was played on for the first time in weeks when Kendal Town Reserves entertained Droylsden Reserves in the Galaxy Lancashire League West Division on Wednesday night.

Today represents Town’s first match in three weeks when the Black and Whites lost 3-2 to Marine, but Edmondson said he was not worried about his side being rusty.

“We’ve been able to train well and Dave Foster has been putting them through the paces so our fitness levels are up there and I’m not worried about rustiness at all.”

Eastwood is not the only game for the Black and Whites this week - they must travel to Gigg Lane on Tuesday for a tough away tie against FC United of Manchester.

The break-off side from Manchester United are just one point off the playoffs in seventh after winning five out of their last six completed games.
