A SEFTON Gonzales double made it three wins on the spin for Kendal as the Mintcakes comfortably dispatched Burscough and moved third in the league table.

Liam Caddick gave the West Lancashire outfit an early lead before Gonzales took centre stage and turned the game on its head before half-time.

The prolific Danny Mitchley maintained his rich vein of form by adding a third after the break, making amends for a first-half penalty miss.

Burscough shocked Parkside Road by taking a ninth minute lead with Caddick collecting a pass from John Connolly and firing past Craig Dootson from the edge of the penalty area.

Mitchley mis-fired with a couple of long-range efforts before Gonzales drew his side level in the 18th minute, scoring for the second game running after his headed goal at Cammell Laird.

After an intricate move, Gonzales latched onto a clever pass from Zach Clark and kept his composure to finish past Burscough keeper Tim Horn.

Moments later, Clark collected a cross-field ball from Ross Lloyd before beating right-back Chris Tyson for pace and crossing for Danny Coid whose cheeky flick was saved by Horn.

And the end to end nature of the game in the opening 20 minutes continued with Caddick failing to provide a finish to Connolly’s defence-splitting pass.

On the half-hour mark, the home side missed a great opportunity to take the lead after the referee pointed to the spot after Burscough captain Paul Williams tripped Mitchley.

But for once this season the 23-year-old’s radar was off, with Mitchley’s penalty clearing the crossbar although Kendal were ahead by the break.

On the stroke of half-time, Clark played in Coid whose powerful shot came back off the underside of the bar, with Gonzales coolly heading home the rebound.

After Mitchley tested  Horn from outside the box at the start of the second period, Philip Clarke rattled the home side’s crossbar with an inswinging free-kick from the left-edge of the area.

But shortly after the hour-mark, Kendal enjoyed clear breathing space as Mitchley raced onto a forward ball to lob the advancing Horn for his ninth goal of the season.

The final scoreline did not reflect the overall dominance of Steve Edmondson’s side with the hosts creating enough chances throughout the game to win by a much healthier margin.

Clark was proving a constant threat down the left-flank with Burscough unable to cope with the former Clitheroe winger’s pace.

After Gonzales’ through ball, Clark cut inside before unleashing a shot from 18 yards which struck Horn’s right-hand post with the keeper beaten.

And Clark was the dangerman again with quarter of an hour remaining, running from deep and evading challenges only to be foiled by a last-ditch tackle by substitute Liam Duff.

Kendal managed to see out time comfortably, although Dootson was required to pull off an impressive save late on to deny Mark Beesley.
