AN excellent standard of table tennis was on show at the Kendal and District Annual Junior Table Tennis Tournament at Burton Memorial Hall.

Titles contested included bands 4 and 5, under 12s, cadets, doubles and the exciting handicap cup, Jugend Von Kendal.

Devun Whitehead's tight defensive work saw him battle his way to victory over Natland's Daniel Holder in band 4 while Matthew Thomas, of Dallam, emerged victorious over Natland's David Viner-Brooks in band 5.

The under 12s produced another great game with Archie Catnach’s top spin attack eventually wearing down his worthy opponent Dylan Hill.

The cadets match saw an exciting battle between Stephen Troughton, of Dallam, and Burton's Jack Wheelhouse with Troughton’s strong all round game eventually winning the day.

Lots of fun was had in the handicap competition with the less experienced players having the opportunity to ‘have a go’ against the more experienced players.

The eventual winner was Whitehead, of Natland, whose handicap of 7 and determination and accuracy meant Troughton’s handicap of 1 proved too steep a hill to climb.

The doubles finals concluded the day with a battle between Gosling/Troughton and Catnach/Whitehead. The more experienced duo of the two Stephens won through 11-7, 11-4.

The day was organised by Norman Philbey.
