KIRKBY Lonsdale won 21-6 when they visited Leigh to hold onto top spot in North One West.

The home side took the lead early on through a couple of penalties which left the first half score at 6-0.

Kirkby eventually found their momentum though and Leandro Kwiczor and Lwazi Ngcungama both scored in the second half and with the help of Tom Pickthall's boot Kirkby grabbed a comfortable victory.

The result left Kirkby one point ahead of derby rivals Kendal, who have a game in hand.

Leigh took the lead with two penalties early on while they had a man advantage when Kirkby left wing, Josh Maddocks, was yellow carded for a late tackle on his opposite number.

When Kendal got back to 15 men, the new half back pairing of Ed Towers at nine and skipper Ben Walker at ten clicked and the stand off put in a run which took play to the Leigh line, but they couldn’t cross.

Both sides struggled in the conditions for the remainder of the half and it wasn't until after the break that Kirkby broke through.

Relentless pressure on the Leigh line saw them cross eventually only to be held up, but the continuing pressure did tell when second row Leandro Kwiczor powered over for a try which was converted by Tom Pickthall to give Kirkby the lead for the first time.

Leigh remained under the cosh as Kirkby were adjudged held up again but back row Lwazi Ngcungama was unstoppable from close range for the second try which was again converted by Pickthall to extend Kirkby’s lead to 14-6 after 28 minutes of the half.

As the clock ticked down Kirkby found themselves again camped on the Leigh line where a succession of five metre scrums had the home side on the rack.

Playing conditions were now very poor and as the ball dropped out of a scrum and over the try line, back row Ngcungama was quickest to react and dive on it for Kirkby's third try which was converted.

The win was now secure and a bonus point beckoned if the fourth try could be scored but time ran out and Kirkby had to settle for the four points.
