A KENDAL tennis coach has been selected to help introduce the sport to children as part of the legacy of Britain's Davis Cup win.

Alex Meek, LTA Level 2 coach, is one of 1,000 qualified coaches chosen to bring tennis to 10,000 children.

He will be a Davis Cup legacy coach with Heversham and Milnthorpe Tennis Club (HMTC).

Margaret Hesmondhalgh, chairman of HMTC said "Alex has been one of our outstanding junior players at Heversham. We are delighted that he has been selected as a Davis Cup legacy coach and proud that our club will be hosting the tennis course for youngsters this summer”

He will be running a free six-week tennis course for 10 children new to tennis and aged between 5 and 8, starting in June.

Jon Griffin, Head Coach at HMTC said: "This is a wonderful opportunity to help inspire the next generation of Andy Murrays and Johanna Kontas”.

THE DAVIS Cup will be on show later this month on the first leg of a nationwide tour.

The iconic trophy, which the Great Britain squad lifted last year, is scheduled to be at the Sands Centre in Carlisle, on Friday April 29.

County Lawn Tennis Associations across the country submitted bids to be included in the tour, which began this month in Glasgow.

Joy Robinson, of Cumbria LTA, said: “It’s very exciting. We are absolutely delighted to have succeeded in getting the cup here so soon - in the first few weeks of the LTA tour.

“I know there will be great interest and we will be putting on a whole programme of tennis and other fun activities on the day.

“We look forward to welcoming as many people as possible and I hope it will inspire people to take up tennis and other sports.”

The trophy will be on show at the Sands Centre sports hall between 1pm and 6pm.
