KENDAL Town winger Danny Wisdom has moved to end speculation surrounding his future at the club by signing a 12-month contract with Town ahead of tomorrow’s visit of a Preston XI for the Sir Tom Finney Shield match.

The former Morecambe trainee joined Kendal a year ago and started the season as cover to Paul Byrne in the left back position. However, a string of hugely impressive displays in the Town shirt saw Wisdom force his way into the side and cement the left-sided midfield position as his own.

Arguably Kendal’s best player in the second half of last season, it was fitting that Wisdom’s 89th-minute header in the 3-2 win over Buxton on the final day of the season was the goal that took Kendal Town into the play-offs.

With several clubs purportedly keen on the winger Town manager Lee Ashcroft was keen to secure the services of the youngster with a bright future in the game and said he was pleased to have Wisdom at Parkside for another season.

Ashcroft said: “ I’m delighted to have secured the services of Danny, several teams have been looking at him and we’re very happy that he’s chosen to stay with Town.”

Kendal will take on a Preston North End XI in a 3pm kick-off tomorrow in a friendly fixture that has been given extra prominence after Sir Tom Finney lent his name to the game, with Kendal taking on Preston in the first ever ‘Sir Tom Finney Shield’ match.

The Kendal Town Club president and iconic Preston North End footballer also looks set to pick Parkside Road over Deepdale tomorrow.

There had been suggestions that Sir Tom would be at the Preston North End v Stoke City friendly, which takes place at Deepdale on the same day as the Kendal match.

However, Town manager Lee Ashcroft confirmed the England great would be at Parkside.

He said :“I’ve spoken to some of Sir Tom’s people and he is definitely planning to attend.”

The Town boss explained “I have a great relationship with Sir Tom and we’ve both come up with the idea of making the Preston game here a bit special and hopefully a annual event.”

Speaking after Kendal’s 4-1 defeat to Morecambe on Tuesday night, Ashcroft also said he was expecting another good work-out for his squad.

“ Obviously I’ve got a lot of fond memories of my time at Preston, but I’m manager of Kendal Town now and my priority is making sure we’re in the best position possible to go into the new season.

“I was a bit unhappy with one or two things in the Morecambe game but hopefully we’ll have them ironed out in time for the start of the season.”

The Sir Tom Finney Shield match kick offs at 3pm.
