Kendal Town travel to Rossendale United tonight in a bid to strengthen their place among the leading contenders in the UniBond League First Division.

On Saturday Tony Hesketh's men were disappointed to lose 2-1 at home to Chorley, but managed to hang on to sixth place in the division as the most of the other top teams also faltered.

Against Chorley Town's normally fluid passing went badly astray in the early stages, letting the visitors force the early pace and score twice in the first half hour.

penalty in the 13th minute when Chorley's Chris Thompson picked up a loose ball just outside the Kendal area, avoided a challenge by Dene Whittal-Williams and punched the ball wide of keeper James Salisbury.

In the 27th minute a neat Chorley move saw James Vernislio pick up a poor clearance and feed back a diagonal ball for Peter Wright to rocket a rising shot into the right hand side of the Kendal net.

Town, forced to reshape when out of sorts captain Lee Ashcroft was substituted on 34 minutes, produced a much more positive second half, but failed to take their chances against a packed Chorley defence until the 87th minute when With minutes left an excellent long pass by Cliff fell neatly for Ged Smith to lob then keeper for 2-1 and deep into added time Mayers almost forced an equaliser, but Chorley keeper Paul Horridge saved with his legs.
