AMBLESIDE United climbed to third place in the West Lancashire League’s Second Division table with a 4-1 victory over Furness Cavaliers on Saturday.

Although markedly the better team in both halves, Ambleside could not impose themselves on the scoreline in a goalless first half.

A handful of tempting half-chances fell to them but all went begging.

Good crosses from both wings by Gary Wilson and Mike Barron fed the strikers, but Zach Clark slid one effort wide and the other came back of the crossbar.

Tom Routledge could not steer another shot on target and when Jamie Hastings picked out Mike Barron, he headed wide.

Cavaliers deserved credit for a spirited rearguard action while not managing to worry the Ambleside keeper, but it changed soon after half time.

In the opening minute Clark picked up the ball on the edge of the box, beat a couple of men and slipped his shot into the corner.

Even when ahead, Ambleside did not score until until the last quarter of an hour.

Substitute Jamie Parkin’s through ball picked out Barron, who finished with a delightful chip over the oncoming keeper.

Calvaliers defence paid the price for backing off Clark as he ran from just over the halfway line and again finished with a shot in the corner.

At 3-0 the game was wrapped up but Clark had time to seal his hat-trick when he profited from a mix-up in the Cavaliers defence to walk the ball over the line.

Charlie Shaw got Cavaliers a colsolation with the last kick but Ambleside now face an important derby with Corinthians this weekend, the frost permitting.
