THE Westmorland Gazette takes a look back at some of the highs and lows of sport through 2010.

JANUARY
- KENDAL Town boss Lee Ashcroft received a three month ban from football activity with the club after allegedly using abusive/inappropriate language to a referee.

- CUMBRIA Sport Partnership launched the Cumbria Talented Athlete Fund. Among its first recipients were Kendal skiier Kelly Greenbank, 13, and Kendal water polo star Glen Robinson, who both received £500.

- DISABLED swimmer Tom Young won two bronze medals at the IPC World Short Course Swimming Championships in Rio de Janeiro.

- CUMBRIAN based M-Sport enjoyed two international rally victories within 24 hours when the Ford Fiesta s2000 won the Monte Carlo rally and then the Q-Tel Qatar Rally.

FEBRUARY

- ASKAM in Furness karter Kristian Brierley became the first recipient of the Association of Kart Tacing Schools scholarships for 2010.

- RUGBY ace Mark Wilson was called up to the England Students squad and broke into the Newcastle Falcons side this season after impressive performances for the Falcons’ development squad.

- KENDAL United received the Charter Standard Community Club status from the FA.

- JUDO fighter Alex Farrington from Kendal Judo Club earned a silver medal at the German International Championships for the visually impaired in Heidelberg.

MARCH

- KENDAL Town chairman Dave Willan vowed to stand by manager Lee Ashcroft as he started a three month ban from all football activity with the club.

- KENDAL Ladies Hockey Club reached the final of the England Knockout Trophy in Essex when Lewes forfeited the semi-final. They lost 3-2 to Teddington but it capped a great season for the team in North Women’s Hockey League Division One.

- Cartmel-trained Chief Dan George won the William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival for trainer Jimmy Moffatt, who claimed his first festival victory.

- AUSTRALIAN Nick Kruger joined Netherfield CC ahead of the Northern Premier Cricket League season. During the season he set a record-equalling innings of 208 for the Parkside Road club.

- FELL runner Mel Hyder destroyed the Wilson Run record at her first attempt, knocking 7 mins 40 off the previous best.

APRIL

- ULVERSTON Hockey Club won the Cumbria Women’s League and with it promotion to Division 2 West of the North Women’s Hockey League.

- KENDAL rider Glen Allen, 13, qualified for the Horse of the Year Show by winning the Chaps HOYS Championship section. Aboard Millpond Look So Cheeky Glen finished a credible fourth in Birmingham later in the year.

- JAMES Ellison started the 2010 MCE Insurance British Superbikes Championship with a win at Brands Hatch for new team Swan Honda. Later in the month Ellison broke his thigh bone at Thruxton which scuppered his championship chances by ruling him out of several rounds.

- GRASMERE’s Matthew Jackman made his Scotland hockey debut at under 16 level in two matches against Wales. He was on the winning side in a 2-1 victory but also tasted defeat, going down 3-2.

- BOWNESS road and cross country runner Rebecca Robinson, who runs for Kendal AC, finished 20th overall and fourth British woman at the London Marathon on her sensational debut at the event.

- HEARTACHE for Kendal Town's footballers for a second season as the promotion dream is ended by Bradford Park Avenue in extra-time of the play-off semi-finals. After a testing season which saw them play 11 matches in April, only for the 2-1 defeat to deny them.

MAY

- KIRKBY Lonsdale RUFC won promotion to North One West with a narrow 13-12 play-off win against Widnes.

- TEAM Wheelbase rider Jebb won the Fred Whitton Challenge by more than a minute. Later in the year he won the Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross for an eighth time as he beat close friend and rival Nick Craig.

- KENDAL golfer Rosie Waller was crowned Cumbria Senior Golf Champion when she defeated Cath Bulman at Penrith Golf Club.

- ADAM Holland from Tavistock set a world record as he completed the Brathay Ten in Ten in 30 hours 20 mins and 54 seconds. The Windermere Marathon attracted another big field and was won by James Buis of Heaton Harriers in a new course record.

- ULVERSTON swimmer Victoria Hevey claimed North West gold in the 50m backstroke in a personal best 31.41.

- FLOOKBURGH lad Jason Walker bagged the winning goal as Barrow FC lifted the FA Trophy for the first time in 20 years with a 2-1 extra-time win against favourites Stevenage Borough at Wembley.

JUNE

- THE Deloitte Ride Across Britain saw Olympians James Cracknell and Rebecca Romero pass through the Lake District with a 600-strong field. The tour stopped off in Over Kellet where it met schoolchildren from Over Kellet Primary School.

- HAYDON Munslow took over as chairman of Kendal Town FC after Dave Willan stepped down from the post after 25 years in charge. - SPORT scientist Julian Ward from near Ulverston flew out to South Africa for the World Cup as part of Portugal’s technical team. Portugal reached the last 16 where they lost 1-0 to eventual winners Spain.

- SEDBERGH School rugby was awarded Rugby World Team of the Year after an unbeaten 2009/10.

- AMBLESIDE United received the Westmorland Football League title and revealed plans to transfer to the West Lancashire Football League.

- IAN Voortman was announced as player/coach at Kendal RUFC for the new National League 2 North season.

JULY

- MORE than 1,000 pupils took part in the inaugural Cumbria SCHOOLympics at Penrith, which took over from the Cumbria Youth Games.

- CHARLOTTE Somers Cocks won gold at the Masters World Championships for mountain-bike orienteering.

- WINDERMERE golf pro Simon Edwards competed alongside the golfing greats at The Open Championship at St Andrews.

- KENDAL AC duo Natalie White and Andy Symonds became world champions at the Orobie Sky Raid event in the Italian Alps.

- SWIMMER Joe Elwood won seven gold medals at an international Catholic Schools event in France.

- NETHERFIELD win the Latham Baxendale Twenty20 Cup with a six-wicket win over Blackpool.

AUGUST

- KENDAL Town welcomed Premier League Wigan Athletic and earned a 3-1 friendly victory against a select XI in their final warm up for the new Evo-Stik Premier League season.

- BURNESIDE won Westmorland crickets's Hackney and Leigh Trophy by beating Arnside by six wickets.

- DISABLED swimmer Tom Young from Newbiggin won IPC World Championship freestyle gold over 400m in Eindhoven, Holland. He also collected two bronze medals at the championships.

- REBECCA Robinson shares team bronze at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona after finishing 24th and fifth Briton in the marathon.

SEPTEMBER

- KENDAL County clinched the West Lancashire League team of the month award under manager Dave Chambers after a Joe Baker hat-trick earned the new boys a 4-2 derby victory over Milnthorpe Corinthians.

- AMATEUR golfing legend Gary Wolstenholme, who plays out of Carus Green Golf Club, qualified for the European Seniors Tour at the age of 50.

- SEDBERGH School students Mel Hyder and Peter Harrison won the English Schools Fell Running Championships.

- WINDERMERE pro golfer Simon Edwards lifted the Ryder Cup 2010 Welsh National PGA Championships.

OCTOBER

- KENDAL fell runner Tom Addison led home the British challenge in the Smarna Gora Mountain Race in Slovenia as he finished 16th. Tom’s cousin, Mark Addison was not far behind in 18th.

- 72-year-old Bill Warrender earned a World Hockey gold medal as England beat Australia 2-1 to lift the Grand Masters Hockey World Cup.

- SUPERBIKE star James Ellison ends the MCE Insurance British Superbikes Championship with two podium finishes at Oulton Park and later joins PTR operated Parkalgar Honda team to contest World Supersport Championship.

- ALISTAIR Dunn, a 38 year old quarry manager in Shap, won the British Open Fell Running Championships for a sixth consecutive year.

NOVEMBER
- KENDAL’s Lynn Hamel won the women’s national Cycling Hill Climb Championships near Bristol.

- SEDBERGH student Abbie Scott earned a call up to the England U20 women’s rugby team.

- NEWBIGGIN’s Tom Young collected two trophies at the Cumbria Sports Awards after his most successful year to date. Young walked off with the Disability Performance of the Year award and the Be Inspired Award.

- GYMNAST Katy Jones won gold for Kendal School of Gymnastics at the Cumbria County Championships in the 12 and over section.

DECEMBER

- CRICKETER Matt Clinton earned a call-up to the England squad for the Deaf Ashes in Australia in January 2011. Clinton, a medium quick swing bowler with Netherfield, will also feature for England in their one day series and Twenty20 matches against the Wallabies and South Africa.

- THE Coppermines Grizedale Stages Rally was cancelled for the first time in its 23 year history after 6-8 inches of snow fell on some parts of the course. Organisers were also concerned for the safety of drivers, spectators and stewards in reaching the course.

- ENDURANCE rider Kath McGee, 50, from Ambleside, and her horse Foxghylls Folly won five awards at the Endurance GB National Awards and finished fifth in the Senior Championship.

- NEW Zealand Test batsman Jamie How was unveiled as Kendal Cricket Club’s new professional for the 2011 FBS Northern Premier Cricket League campaign.
