Former England coach Peter Moores believes losing Stuart Broad for the rest of the Ashes is a major blow - but one which the tourists can overcome.

Moores, who was ousted from his role with England at the start of 2009 after a public falling-out with then-captain Kevin Pietersen, believes the bowler who replaces Broad will come into the team under ideal circumstances.

Broad has been ruled out of the remainder of the Ashes series by a stomach injury, with England 1-0 up ahead of the third Test in Perth.

"He'll be missed a lot," Moores told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"What Stuart brings is that for a young bloke he's quite a feisty character, he gets stuck in.

"He bats, bowls, fields - he's a full-on cricketer. So from that point of view I think he will be missed.

"They're not easy holes to fill but there's no better time to come into that England team for somebody else."

Tim Bresnan, Ajmal Shahzad and Chris Tremlett are the three seamers vying for elevation to the team to tackle Australia.

"The lad who comes in, if it's Bresnan, Shahzad or Tremlett, there couldn't be a better time to come in to a team with confidence and a lot of senior guys around," said Moores.

"Hopefully whoever comes in will settle in quickly.

"Though Broad is a key player, he hasn't played a massive role in those first two Tests, other people have dominated."
