WESTGATE moved back to the top of the Westmorland Cricket League after crushing Ambleside in a defeat that confirmed the Lake District side’s relegation from the top tier.

Lord (15) and Wilson (17) got Westgate off to a good start.

Despite two quick wickets Wilkinson cranked the pressure up on Ambleside with 47, and an unbeaten 71 from Atkinson added 81 to the score for the third wicket.

Westgate declared on 168-5 after 36 overs.

In response an inspired opening burst by Nisbet (4-21) got Westgate off to the flying start they required.

At 25-5 in the 11th over the writing appeared to be on the wall, and a couple of run outs didn’t help the situation.

And with Ambleside on 51 they were dismissed to give Westgate a 117-run win that puts them five points clear at the top.

That was because Warton could only pick up a winning draw at home to Milnthorpe.

Warton scored 147-9 but they couldn’t get Milnthorpe out in response as the Cumbrian side scored 88-5 to give themselves a point.

Sedgwick were relegated from Division One despite a 15-point success at home to Arnside.

They scored 156-9 and in the second innings, Willacy picked up a six-wicket haul as Arnside were bowled out for 60.

Burneside’s Airey and Batty picked up five wickets apiece as they helped their side beat Silverdale by 36 runs.

Burneside had been dismissed for 81 as Moffat recorded an eight-wicket haul, but that was enough to stop Burneside’s bowlers tearing into the opposing batting line-up as Batty claimed figures of 5-9 and Airey 5-17 on Silverdale’s way to being all out for 45.

Shireshead’s hopes of winning the championship finally faded in the penultimate week of the season.

Yates and Jacques (36) laid a good foundation adding 65 for the first wicket from 20 overs. Yates, who went on to score 54, and Rafferty added a further 31 to put the visitors in a strong position before both fell.

Oliver (33 not out) and Gould (23 not out) struck the ball cleanly to allow Shireshead to declare an over early on 167-3.

No wickets fell until the 17th over but they began to tumble when Jacques (6-51) was introduced.

Sharman and Cook (29) took the fight back to Shireshead as Bare reached 113-5.

When Jacques removed Sharman and Neville from consecutive balls with eight overs remaining a Shireshead victory was still on the cards but Bare held on, despite a comical run out from the final ball of the innings.

Shireshead are 15 points behind leaders Westgate with just 15 points left to play for - an impregnable position due to Westgate’s greater number of wins.

The match between Bolton-le-Sands and Heysham finished in a rain affected draw.

Trimpell have been promoted along with champions Windermere to the top division after beating Burneside A by four wickets .
