Five south Cumbrian wrestling champions were present as the Cumberland & Westmorland wrestlers gathered at Low Hesket V.H.

They were in attendance with the seven championship trophies which they have won over this past summer season.

George Wilson from Selside won the under 18 years trophy and the Brocklebank brothers from Warton collected four between them. Ben won the 14 stones at the Westmorland county show; Graham is a double champion winning the 13 stones and also the 15 stones.

Thomas then crowned a very successful season for the family by winning the Allweights at Alwinton Show in the foothills of the Cheviots, which is the last event of the outdoor season.

This local style of wrestling has been including female events for several seasons now but this was the first year to include championships for ladies. Two trophies have been awarded, one for 10 stones and the other for the All weights & these were selected from the Steadman collection which belongs to the C and W wrestling association and is deposited in the county archives. Both these trophies were won by Connie Hodgson from Dent who is now a double champion.

Wrestlers gathered on Saturday evening from four clubs at Low Hesket V. H. to compete for the Academy Shield. After an evening of very competitive wrestling the result was:1st. Carlisle 39 points, 2nd Kendal 35, 3rd Rothbury 30, 4th Waberthwaite 18.
